Joe Gibbs Racing loses Matt Lucas as he joins Hattori Racing Enterprises

    It was announced late Wednesday morning (12/22/21) that Matt Lucas who has worked as a Shop manager, Engineer and Crew Chief for Joe Gibbs Racing will be migrating to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to become Team Manager, and the Crew Chief for Chase Purdy.


Lucas has many races under his belt in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, working as a Crew Chief for more than 100 races, and scoring two victories with NASCAR Cup Series Champion Matt Kenseth. Additionally, Lucas has five NASCAR Xfinity Series Championships to his name, two as an engineer with Carl Edwards, one in 2007, and an owners championship in 2010. Lucas' claimed his third Championship in 2012 as a Crew Cheif, participating in winning Joe Gibbs Racing's NASCAR Xfinity Series points title. His most recent titles came with Daniel Suarez in 2016 and Daniel Hemric in 2021, where he served as a shop manager. As Chase Purdy buckles up and joins Hattori Racing enterprises in 2022, Lucas will play a vital role with the No. 61 team, guiding Purdy through races with strategy.


Lucas explained “I’ve been impressed with Shige’s (Hattori) vision for this organization and look forward to being a part of it,” Lucas said. “Scott Zipadelli and all the people on the No. 16 team have accomplished so much in the last few years and we want to continue that success with expanding to a second program. HRE has been successful because of the people and team members here, and we’ll need more of that in 2022 and beyond. I’m excited to help guide the expansion of this team and continue to uphold the high standard that HRE has been accustomed to.”
