Starting from the pole position, Tyler Reddick won the 2022 "Verizon" 200 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course on Sunday, July 31st. Clearly dominating the race with their race-strategy, Reddick led for 38 of the 86-laps ran. The driver for Richard Childress Racing became just the 6th different driver to have multiple wins this season.
Tire wear was orginally going to be a "huge factor", but it turned out to be the complete opposite. Ryan Blaney, at the end of the race, was running on some crazily old tires compared to the rest of the field. However, that did not appear to affect his speed around the track.
In the restart to begin the overtime attempt, Ross Chastain chose the unlikely idea of missing the chaos of turn 1 and using the little access road just past the first corner; going the long way around. However, the idea worked out and placed Chastain right behind the No. 8 car going into the next few turns. The No. 1 car actually passed Reddick for the lead before NASCAR decided that they were going to give him a "30-second penalty". The penalty was also dished out to the No. 3 car of Austin Dillon, who attempted the same maneuver that the No. 1 did with the access road.
The current NASCAR Cup Series Rookies all scored a top-5 finish, after the penalty was handed out to the No. 1 and No. 3 cars. Austin Cindric in the No. 2 Ford Mustang finished runner-up, while Harrison Burton and Todd Gilliland picked up 3rd and 4th, respectively.
It is worth noting that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway victory for the No. 8 team was the first multi-win season for Richard Childress Racing since 2017: Ryan Newman won at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Austin Dillon won at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
