Tuesday afternoon (April 26th, 2022), David Gilliland Racing revealed that the team would field a Ford Mustang for this weekends ARCA Mendar's Series East race at Dover Motor Speedway. In doing so, Friday's race will mark the debut of the Ford Mustang for the ARCA Menards Series.
Neither Chevrolet or Toyota have attempted to gain approval for new body types in the ARCA Mendards Series, and consequently the Chevy SS and an older Toyota Camry will remain to be the only cars fielded by either manufacturer.
While some teams will continue to field the 'tried and true' Ford Fusion for numerous upcoming races, David Gilliland Racing will take the first step forward bringing a No. 17 Ford Mustang to the track this weekend with sponsorship from Ford Performance Racing school.
Much like other teams have done in the past, this paint scheme will feature the white, blue and red colors closely resembling the liveries of the vehicles actually used at Ford Performance Racing School. Drivers like Chase Briscoe and Clint Bowyer have brought similar paint schemes to the track in recent years, however for the first time David Gilliland Racing will bring this paint scheme to the track with young driver Taylor Gray.
The manufacturer, Ford, has been a strong supporter of David Gilliland Racing for several years. The team has fielded many of their race cars and trucks with Ford Performance sponsorship in the past.
