Rackley W.A.R. |
Matt DiBenedetto finds himself in this position, dropping to a lower series after a handful of events over the last two seasons. Prior to the Summer of 2021, DiBenedetto was set to be replaced by incoming rookie driver Austin Cindric, as Team Penske's up-and-comer would advance to the highest NASCAR series. Instead, as Brad Keselowski made the decision to become a partial owner of Roush Fenway Racing (now Roush Fenway Keselwoski Racing), Austin Cindric would begin his NASCAR Cup Series career in team Penske's No. 2 Ford. While many believed this would save Matt DiBennedetto from becoming a free agent, that was not the case. In this scenario, Wood Brothers Racing took on a young Harrison Burton, the son of Jeff Burton, who would also compete for Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors in 2022. Matt DiBenedetto's departure from the team was entirely set in stone.
As Matt DiBenedetto searched for a new ride in 2022, rumors flew of where he might end up. Front Row Motorsports? Rick Ware Racing? Stewart-Haas Racing's NASCAR Xfinity Series team? Each and every one of those possibilities were shot down as DiBenedetto made several "unflattering" comments on his social media accounts, and on radio shows. His career was sent into a downward spiral, as nobody wanted to be associated with him, and his sometimes questionable talent.
For months it looked as though Matt DiBenedetto's racing carrer may have come to an end as most seats in NASCAR's top-three series were filled one by one, leaving fewer and fewer places for DiBenedetto to wind up. Although Rackley W.A.R. may not be the most competitive team, it is certainly good for Matt DiBenedetto that he found a team who could look past his "track record" off the track, and see some sort of value in his racing talent. DiBenedetto has never competed in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series before, but his resume is not exactly horrible otherwise. Through a lengthy career in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (2009-2019) DiBennedetto scored only two top-10 finishes, but managed to scrape together 31 top-10 and nine top-five finished in the NASCAR Cup Series (2015-2021).
It's safe to say that Matt DiBenedetto fans will sleep well tonight, knowing their driver will hit the track in 2022, but driver No. 25 has a lot of work on his hands as he drops from one of NASCAR's better rides, to one that takes driver performance.
