NASCAR serves Mike Harmon a hefty penalty

Mike Harmon Racing
NASCAR driver and Xfinity Series team owner, Mike Harmon has been dealt a hefty penalty by the NASCAR sanctioning body Monday afternoon after Mike Harmon and his race team broke NASCAR's vehicle testing policy.

As it was well documented by the team's Instagram account, Mike Harmon Racing traveled to Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina during the week of November 14th (2021). NASCAR believes that this outing was scheduled with the intent of privately testing team equipment. The action of testing team equipment in a private manner was outlawed by in sport more than five years ago in 2015.

As a consequence of doing so, NASCAR docked the Harmon 75 owners points, and 75 drivers points which will be directly be implemented into his 2022 points standings. In addition to Harmon's penalties, Crew Chief Ryan Bell will incurr a $50,000 fine on behalf of the teams actions, and will be temporarily suspended for six points paying races at the beginning of the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series season.

Harmon issued a statement Monday evening (11/22/21) that explained the reasoning behind the team's on track appearance at Rockingham Speedway. Rather than "circumventing the rules" Mike Harmon claims that himself and his team were at Rockingham Speedway taking part in an "exhibition charity event". Harmon gave no further details of the event in question, but noted that his team plans to appeal the ruling. See the complete statement below:

Harmon's actions that broke section 5.1.a.c.d of the NASCAR rule book can be clearly seen in the photos below:
