Making his 5th win of the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series season here at the Indianapolis (Motor Speedway) Road Course, Austin Cindric took the victory over AJ Allmendinger in the "Pennzoil" 150
Leading more laps than anyone, Austin Cindric led just under half of the race with 29 laps led. Cindric and a majority of the Xfinity Series field have experience here at the Indy Road Course, but Cindric’s success here today could be mean big things for his final Cup start of the season tomorrow afternoon.
Thus far Austin Cindric’s best Cup Series finish was 15th during the “Daytona” 500. While Cindric has qualified well at the road courses he attended, in the long run he hasn’t had speed, his experience at the Indianapolis Road Course will reflect on his finish tomorrow.
While this race may have had an easily expected winner, for most of the day it didn’t look so straight forward. Drivers like Justin Haley, Riley Herbst, and Noah Gragson actually found themselves up front for much of the race, while drivers like Austin Cindric and AJ Allmendinger were noticing struggling. Cindric obviously came back to win, but Allmendinger was not nearly as lucky, as he missed multiple turns at the beginning of the race, and eventually fell short of the win by one position, as he finished 2nd.
Issues were prevalent today in turns 5 and 6 where the tight link in the track led several drivers to drive off course. “Teammates” like Chase Elliott and Sam Mayer fell victim to this part of the track as they banged doors through the corner, and eventually Sam Mayer ran through the grass and into the tire barrier. Another driver who had a less than pleasant time in turns 5 and 6 was Chris Wright, who accidentally missed the turn and ran over a large curb which sent him airborne for a moment, and very much damaged his car.
Justin Haley won stage 1 of this race, and AJ Allmendinger won stage 2 of this race.
