This Week In NASCAR History: June 13th - 19th


     NASCAR's history is surprisingly not very well known, even for avid fans; this article is meant to get fans in the know of the most notable NASCAR history that happened in this week throughout our sport’s past.

  • June 19th, 1949 - NASCAR holds its first 'Strictly Stock' at Fairgrounds Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bob Flock nabs the first pole, Jim Roper won the race, and Sara Christian, who finished 14th, is named the first female driver to compete in NASCAR's premier division.
  • June 16th, 1951 - NASCAR's first night race takes place at Columbia Speedway.
  • June 13th, 1954 - NASCAR holds its first road course event at an airport in Linden, New Jersey.
  • June 16th, 1968 - Winning the Carolina 500, Donnie Allison notches his first NASCAR Grand National win.
  • June 13th, 1982 - Tim Richmond wheels his Buick to victory lane at Riverside International Raceway, grabbing his first career win.
  • June 15th, 1986 - Richard Petty marks his 1000th NASCAR career start at Michigan.
  • June 19th, 2003 - NASCAR announces that at the beginning of the 2004 season Winston will be replaced by Nextel for the title sponsor.
  • June 14th, 2011 - Darrell Waltrip, Richie Evans, Cale Yarborough, Dale Inman, and Glen Wood are announced as the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2012.
