Everything you need to know about the SRX

Superstar Racing Experience

Tonight, June 12th 2021, the Camping World SRX Series will make its debut race at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut. Now is the best time to get all your questions answered before the series’ inaugural season begins! Let’s go over everything you need to know:

What is the SRX Series?

Well, SRX stands for “Superstar Racing Experience”, and is a short track series thought up by none other than  former NASCAR Cup Series Champion, and team owner, Tony Stewart, and the bright minded Ray Evernham, who was a very successful crew chief in the NASCAR Cup Series, and former team owner of “Evernham Motorsports”. Two other names who were notably present in the formation of this series were George Pune, and Sandy Montag. This series is meant to feature superstar, or at least successful drivers, in a similar way that the famed IROC did.

Who will be driving?

While the field will be smaller than most, the SRX Series has a plethora of talented drivers ready to take green flag this summer. These drivers include: Marco Andretti (No. 98), Helio Castroneves (No. 3), Ernie Francis Jr. (No. 2), Bill Elliott (No. 9), Tony Kanaan (No. 48), Bobby Labonte (No. 18), Willy T. Ribbs (No. 17), Tony Stewart (No. 14), Doug Colby (No. 10), Paul Tracy (No. 13), Michael Waltrip (No. 15), Greg Biffle (No. 69). Young driver Hailie Deegan will also make her series debut filling in for Tony Kanaan at Knoxville Raceway, and Slinger Speedway, where on those dates Kanaan has prior commitments. Her racing number is yet to be announced.

When and where can I see these races?

Assuming you haven’t bought tickets to attend these races in person, you can catch all 6 Camping World SRX Series races live on the main CBS channel, on Saturdays at 8:00 PM ET. To see the dates, and location of each race CLICK HERE, where you will be directed to our SRX schedule page.

What makes this series different

For starters, and most obviously, these SRX cars feature a monstrous wing, reminiscent of the Dodge Daytona or Plymouth Superbird. Another big difference with these cars is actually quite popular with auto racing fans, the SRX cars DO NOT have a front splitter. Yes you heard me right, these cars do not have a front splitter meaning that (for the most part) a trip through some grass, or a minor impact should not mean the end of the day for any of these drivers.

In addition to these more cosmetic differences, these cars will feature Ilmor V8 396 engines (with Edelbrock components) bringing a whopping 700 horsepower, as well as breaks from PFC.

Each race in this series will be composed of 3 rounds; 2 fifteen minute heat races, as well as a final 100 lap (150 lap at Slinger Speedway) race to the checkered flag. The first heat race will have it’s starting lineup selected by a random draw, while the second race will have it’s starting lineup determined by the inverted results of the first heat race. The main event’s starting lineup will be determined by the finishing results of the 2nd heat race.

Like previously mentioned, this series has many similarities to the IROC Series of days gone by. One of those similarities is that cars will be randomly selected and given to drivers, prioritizing driving talent more than strong teams and fast cars. To the same tune, crew chiefs will randomly change from week to week, meaning no driver will be getting comfortable with one crew chief or another.

Hopefully this article was able to answer any burning questions you have about the all new Camping World SRX Series. Be sure to tune in tonight (and throughout the remainder of the season) to CBS at 8:00 PM ET, to see a once in a lifetime event, and see all the firsts of the SRX Series.
