Joey Logano wins “Food City Dirt Race” at Bristol

Team Penske

Joey Logano has won the NASCAR Cup Series “Food City Dirt Race” at Bristol Motor Speedway, scoring his 27th career victory in the Cup Series.

History was made today as the NASCAR Cup Series returned to race on a dirt surface for the first time in more than 50 years. The last time that the Cup Series raced on dirt was in 1970, at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, in Raleigh, North Carolina where Richard Petty won. This time around Bristol Motor Speedway was filled with approximately 9 feet of clay soil, and transformed into a dirt track.

In today’s race we saw drivers such as Daniel Suárez, Martin Truex Jr. (who won today’s earlier “Pinty’s Truck Race on Dirt”), Ryan Newman, William Byron, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and others dominate. Martin Truex Jr., who has little dirt racing experience, lead this race until roughly a quarter of the way through stage 2, when he was passed by a driver equally as surprising, Daniel Suárez. Suárez held onto the lead for a majority of the 2nd stage, until on a late stage restart he was challenged by Joey Logano, and Joey Logano obtained the lead. For the remainder of the race there was an intense battle between Joey Logano, and Denny Hamlin for the lead. Joey Logano was able to hold his position and win the race, though Hamlin wasn’t nearly as lucky, as Ricky Stenhouse Jr. passed him in NASCAR Overtime to finish 2nd.

This race surprisingly saw many experienced dirt drivers underperform, and a couple didn’t even finish the race. On lap 53, two experienced dirt drivers who many considered to be contenders for the win, were taken out of the picture. From 2nd place Christopher Bell, driver of the No. 20, lost control of his car and spun around, collecting the No. 5 of Kyle Larson, and the No. 42 of Ross Chastain. Both Christopher Bell and Ross Chastain both were forced to park what was left of their cars, though Kyle Larson was able to continue the race with his badly damaged car. This incident alone took experienced dirt racers Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson out of contention for the win.

As most fans expected this race saw many wrecks, and quite a bit of contact between drivers. Through all of this chaos, the race was extremely entertaining, with the many unknowns looming above.
