Kurt Busch, McDonald's to honor Bill Elliott with 2022 Darlington Throwback paint scheme

   At Darlington Raceway on Sunday, May 8th, the No. 45 Toyota Camry will carry an extremely familiar paint scheme for those who were around in 1996 and were watching NASCAR in the later '90's. 

The Classic "Golden Arches" fast-food restaurant will be the primary sponsor for Kurt Busch's No. 45 car, recreating the 1996 McDonald's paint scheme ran by Bill Elliott. That season would be a winless season for the 1988 NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion, only scoring 6 top-10 finishes in 24 starts. Elliott crashed during the spring race at Talladega Superspeedway, the No. 94 Ford Thunderbird flipped multiple times before landing along the backstretch. In the incident, the popular driver suffered a broken leg, which caused him to miss the next 5 consecutive races. He would also not start in 2 more races later during the season as he nursed his injuries.

It is also fitting, as Bill Elliott himself will join as the guest analyst for NASCAR on FOX during the final race Stage at Darlington Raceway.

The Darlington Throwback race for the NASCAR Cup Series will take place on Sunday, May 8th. Live television coverage will begin at 3:30 PM EST on FOX Sports 1.
