In an extremely low-key race at Martinsville Speedway, William Byron took home the win in the NASCAR Cup Series "Blu-Emu Maximum Pain Relief" 400 on Saturday, April 9th.
The driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro, who started in 5th position, led every single lap in the final stage to claim his victory. Only polesitter Chase Elliott joined his teammate Byron as drivers to lead more than 5 laps in the night race. The No. 9 car led a grand total 185-laps, stealing both stage victories before losing the lead on pit road to William Byron. Bryon led for 212-laps, leaving Blaney to lead 5-laps and Austin Dillon to lead a single circuit. All evening long, it was hard for drivers to pass another, as it appeared no one had enough power to get around or even catch up to their rivals.
The race didn't necessarily have the greatest conditions to begin with, as rain and snow hit the track prior to the drop of the green flag. A temperature close to 40 degrees Fahrenheit did not help once the race go started, as no rubber could get laid down on the surface, which usually helps drivers with grip as they run around the track. Only two petty cautions did not live up to the short track racing style and definitely something we would not have seen with the Gen 6 car. The race overall, was not great for entertainment.
