This Week in NASCAR History: April 17th - 23rd

NASCAR's deep history is surprisingly not very well known, even for avid fans; this article is meant to get fans in the know of the most notable NASCAR history that happened throughout this week.

April 17th, 1952 - Marshall Teague is stripped of all earned NASCAR Grand National points after he leaves NASCAR to move to the AAA Stock Car division, in hopes of catching a ride in the Indianapolis 500. Teague was ranked sixth in the NASCAR Grand National points standings.

April 17th, 1965 - Rookie driver Dick Hutcherson takes the checkered flag to win the 100-mile NASCAR Grand National race at Greensville-Pickens Speedway, notching his first NASCAR Grand National race: Hutcherson led all but nine laps of the race.

April 21st, 1968 - David Pearson wins the Gwyn Staley Memorial 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway, after taking the lead with only 10 laps to go: Seventeen of the entered cars are eliminated due to engine failure.

April 18th, 1970 - Richard Petty dominates the Gwyn Staley Memorial 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway, leading 349 of 400 laps, and winning the race. This is only the second NASCAR event televised by ABC Sports.

April 21st, 1974 - Richard Petty takes the checkered flag to win the Gwyn Staley Memorial 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway, while using a small engine in his Dodge racecar. NASCAR rules stated that small engines can compete without restrictor plates, but the 426-429 Cid large engines must run with carburetor-restrictive devices.

April 22nd, 1990 - Brett Bodine takes the checkered flag to win the First Union 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway, notching his first NASCAR Winston Cup career victory while driving Kenny Bernstein's Buick racecar.

April 20th, 1998 - Bobby Hamilton wins the Goody's 500 at Martinsville Speedway in dominating fashion, leading 378 of 500 laps, and finishing 6.3 seconds ahead of Ted Musgrave.
