This Week In NASCAR History: November 14th - 20th

 


     NASCAR's deep history is surprisingly not very well known, even for avid fans; this article is meant to get fans in the know of the most notable NASCAR history that happened throughout this week.


November 16th, 1952 - Donald Thomas wins at Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta, with relief from his brother, Herb. At 20 years old, Donald becomes the youngest driver to win a NASCAR Grand National race.


November 18th, 1956 - Buck Baker wraps up the 1956 championship by winning the season finale at Wilson, N.C. Joe Weatherly crosses the finish line first, but Baker was the first to pass the scoring stand on turn one.


November 15th, 1970 - Cale Yarborough wins the American 500 at Rockingham, then in victory lane he announces that he will be moving to USAC Indy Car racing in 1971.


November 19th, 1970 - Jacques Passino, the director of Ford's racing program, quits the company due to Ford's announcement that it will cut back its factory effort on 1971.


November 18th, 1983 - In wake of the controversial Charlotte race dubbed "Pettygate", Richard Petty announces that after 26 years, he would be leaving Petty Enterprises at the and of the 1983 season.


November 20th, 1983 - Bill Elliott wins the season finale at Riverside, notching his first NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National career victory; Bobby Allison wraps up his first NASCAR championship after finishing ninth.


November 20th, 1988 - Bill Elliott clinches his first NASCAR Winston Cup championship, finishing 24 points ahead of Rusty Wallace, who wins the season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It is the last race of both Cale Yarborough and Benny Parsons' careers.


November 18th, 1990 - Mike Ritch, a pit crew member for Bill Elliott is hit on pit road and fatally injured. Dale Earnhardt grabs his fourth NASCAR Winston Cup title; Morgan Shepherd wins the season finale.


November 15th, 1992 - Bill Elliott and Alan Kulwicki scramble for points when the current points leader, Davey Allison, is knocked out of title contention by an early crash. Elliott ends up winning the race, but is only 10 points ahead of Kulwicki in the final standings; this is the closest title race in NASCAR history. Richard Petty competes in his final career event, while Jeff Gordon makes his first NASCAR Winston Cup start.


November 16th, 1997 - Jeff Gordon notches his second NASCAR Winston Cup championship, becoming NASCAR's youngest driver to have two championships; Bobby Labonte wins the NAPA 500 finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway.


November 20th, 2000 - Jerry Posts his first NASCAR Winston Cup career victory in the season finale at Atlanta; Bobby Labonte takes the NASCAR Winston Cup championship. It is also the final race in Darrell Waltrip's career.


November 15th, 1992 - Richard Petty participated in his final NASCAR Winston Cup Series race during the season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway, ending a racing career that spanned more than 25 years.
