Sheldon Creed has won the “Toyota” 200 Presented by CK Power at World Wide Technology Raceway, after sweeping both stages amidst a power outage. Creed, who won at the track this time last year, certainly has a foothold on the 1 1/4 mile track, bringing opportunities for the young driver concerning the future of his racing career.
Yesterday night’s race was interesting to say the least, and alongside the earlier ARCA Race we definitely have had a hectic start to our race weekend. The biggest concern of the night at World Wide Technology Raceway was lighting. After a transformer fire somewhere outside the race track, power to lights on the track’s backstretch went dark, and for nearly 50 minutes the race was red flagged in hopes of a lighting solution. Portable lighting was brought in and almost ready to be used, when suddenly a backup power was successfully accessed and lights could be turned back on. Though the lights had returned, scoring and timing for the race was not quite right, and was unable to be used by NASCAR.
Alongside that wild occurrence, for possibly the first time all season we saw the entirety of Kyle Busch Motorsports struggle. Kyle Busch Motorsports’ No. 4 team won the regular season championship by a decent margin, but tonight as the playoffs started John Hunter Nemechek fell backwards through the field, with multiple handling issues, and was unable to stick with many of the other playoff contenders. Chandler Smith? While his Toyota Tundra had good handling, and Smith drove the truck fairly decently, an issue with the truck’s right rear hub virtually ended the No. 18 team’s day early. The third man on the KBM team was here for his debut race, and unfortunately found himself with some pretty heavy contact. This undoubtedly damaged the truck and left the No. 51 finishing 26th.
Though many teams had a troublesome race, one team who did not disappoint tonight was the Hailie Deegan’s No. 1 crew. While the female driver battled her way into the Top-15 for most of the night, in the final stage of the race she found herself well within the Top-10, and eventually managed to finish 7th. This finish for the rookie marks the best finish in the Camping World Truck Series from a female at a non-superspeedway track. Even though Hailie Deegan has some proving do before she finds her way into better opportunities, she has by far shown quite a bit of talent and ability (tonight alone), making a huge difference in her fan perception since her debut was announced last fall.
