The pilot of the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro had started the race in 26th. By the Stage 1 end, Dillon had worked his way to the front, finishing 3rd in the stage. Dillon started on the front row to start Stage 2, but after a line formed on the top lane, he fell back to mid-pack.
Coming to the finish of Stage 2, Dillon side-drafted Brad Keselowski's No. 2 car coming around the 4th turn to the green-white checkered flag. Dillon passed Keselowski for the 6th spot a little before the line, but before the Dillon completely cleared the No. 2 car, it appeared that Keselowski clipped the rear quarter-panel of the No. 3 car, sending Dillon head-on into the outside retaining wall, ending the RCR drivers day.
Leading into the race at Michigan, Austin Dillon was one place under the playoff cutline, with RCR teammate Tyler Reddick above him inside the playoff bubble. With a DNF this week, it places a lot of stress on the No. 3 team to get him into the playoffs at Daytona. RCR must be very careful, as if Dillon and teammate Reddick do not finish well at Daytona, and a total different driver wins, RCR loses a chance in the 2021 Cup Series Playoffs.
A HARD HIT for Austin Dillon at the end of Stage 2!

That was uncalled for. Wow.
