Moments ago it was announced that Austin Cindric will drive the Team Penske No. 2 Mustang, and that fellow Xfinity Series driver, Harrison Burton, will join Wood Brothers Racing to drive the No. 21 for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season. Team Penske is closely associated with Wood Brothers Racing.
While only Cindric has been within the Penske pipeline (driving the Xfinity Series No. 22), this news comes as a giant NASCAR silly season shakeup. Prior to today’s announcement it was known and expected that Austin Cindric would drive the Wood Brothers Racing No. 21 next season. With this change it can be assumed that a Team Penske driver Brad Keselowski’s rumored move to Roush Fenway Racing will happen, as his ride with Penske is no longer available.
Another driver who will see some changes based on this decision is Matt DiBenedetto, who currently drives the Wood Brothers Racing No. 21. While DiBenedetto is currently in the final year of his contract with the team, rumors about Brad Keselowski taking a Owner-Driver role at Roush Fenway Racing had insiders and fans alike questioning if DiBenedetto would see a contract extension, or even an opportunity to move to the No. 2 car. With this announcement being made public today, those assumptions are completely out of the question.
Austin Cindric a past NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion has 6 Cup Series starts to his name, all driving the Team Penske No. 33 this season. Harrison Burton on the other hand only has one Cup Series start to his name, which came earlier this season at Talladega with Guant Brothers Racing. Unless Wood Brothers Racing miraculously switches manufacturers, it seems as though Harrison Burton is leaving the Toyota pipeline.
