23XI Racing |
While it has been rumored for weeks, it is now official, Ty Dillon will drive the No. 23 car for 23XI Racing in their first (non points paying) race, the Busch Clash.
23XI Racing is a brand new team in the NASCAR Cup Series founded by NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin, and basketball legend Michael Jordan. To start the team Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan bought out the charter to the No. 13 car at Germaine Racing, the car Ty Dillon drove in 2020. 23XI opened their doors lat fall, with hopes to race in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season.
The team chose an African American driver by the name of Bubba Wallace to drive their No. 23 car this upcoming season. While it is expected that the No. 23 Toyota Camry and 23XI Racing as a team will be very competitive, Bubba Wallace hasn't always had such luck. Prior to this deal Bubba Wallace was signed with Richard Petty Motorsports to drive the iconic No. 43, and it's safe to say he didn't do too well over there.
Wallace's best shot to enter the Busch Clash at Daytona International Speedway was if he had won a stage in the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season, but he never did. This left 23XI without a driver in the Clash. It started as a rumor, but quickly took off that Ty Dillion would drive the No. 23 Toyota Camry in the Busch Clash this upcoming Tuesday.
Today the team announced that Ty Dillon, grandson of NASCAR team owner Richard Childress would be driving the No. 23 car in the Busch Clash. The No. 23 car will be sponsored by Root Insurance for this race in a orange and black paint scheme that was also released today.
I'll admit I heard the rumors, but I never saw this coming! It's great to see Ty Dillon getting some opportunities to drive in competitive equipment this year, especially from the team the caused him to go unemployed.
