At today’s Daytona 500, NASCAR will honor the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. with a moment of silence on lap 3.
Dale Earnhardt, the legendary NASCAR driver, lost his life 20 years ago this week in the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. To this day Dale Senior’s “go get em’” attitude, and career, built from the ground up, inspires fans, and drivers alike.
Though 20 years have passed Dale Earnhardt Senior’s legacy still lives on. NASCAR encourages fans (especially those at Daytona International Speedway) to hold up 3 fingers during the moment of silence on lap 3 to pay respect to Earnhardt Sr. . The number 3 holds significance because Dale Earnhardt Sr. drove the No. 3 car for Richard Childress Racing.
