The incident in question occurred during Sunday's "Autotrader Echopark Automotive" 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, where Bowman's race machine experienced a blown tire situation and spun, grazing the outside retaining wall. Despite appearing to be a minor impact with the wall, Alex Bowman sustained a hard hit from within the driver seat.
Hendrick Motorsports' No. 48 car made it out of the wreck, slightly damaged, though still functional. Alex Bowman however, finished the race 29th, after sustaining significant injuries.
In team radio communications, the 29-year-old driver commented on the crash saying “I don’t understand how this thing’s still rolling. That’s the hardest I’ve crashed anything in my entire life.”
Shockingly, Alex Bowman has sustained a head injury like a concussion, but the impact had barely damaged the car. Advocates for the up-and-coming NASCAR star joined the army of fans calling for changes to NASCAR's Generation-Seven Cup Series race car. NASCAR's newest creation has put on great racing, and shown miraculous durability, but in some instances at the cost of the driver's safety.
This incident comes months after a qualifying wreck for Kurt Busch at Pocono Raceway, which still renders him unable to compete, due to concussion like symptoms.
Noah Gragson, a well known name in the NASCAR Xfinity Series will fill in for Alex Bowman, driving the No. 48 in Sunday’s superspeedway race. Gragson will effectively abandon his previously expected ride with Beard Motorsports to drive the No. 48. Justin Allagaier will drive the Beard Motorsports No. 62.
