This return will mark Allmendinger's first full-time attempt at the Cup Series since 2018, when he drove for JTG Daugherty Racing.
During the past four seasons, AJ Allmendinger has driven for the up-and-coming Kaulig Racing. In the beginning the driver made scattered starts for the organization, before becoming a full-time driver for the team in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2021.
As Allmendinger took over full-time responsibilities in NASCAR's lower tiered series, the veteran driver also took on part-time Cup Series responsibilities in 2021, scoring a prestigious win at the Indianapolis Road Course.
Now more than a year after that win, Allmendinger will be setting the NASCAR Xfinity Series aside for a return to NASCAR’s top series. This news comes just before his final Cup Series start of the 2022 season, where he will attempt the Charlotte ROVAL in Kaulig Racing’s No. 16 machine.

UPDATE: As the news became official on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, Kaulig Racing also made the big announcement that Chandler Smith will join the team in 2023 to drive the No. 16 machine in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
Chandler Smith currently drives for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. With Kyle Busch shifting to Richard Childress Racing and Chevrolet in 2023, Kyle Busch Motorsports is in a precarious situation. The team will be without Toyota assistence.
Chandler Smith told Fox Sports' Bob Pockrass that he did infact have opportunities to enter the NASCAR Xfinity Series with Toyota. Smith said that ultimately he weighed the benefits, and found Kaulig Racing to be a greater opportunity.
