Allmendinger was only set to make 16 starts in the No. 16 Cup Series car this season, with the Charlotte ROVAL being his final time in 2022. Instead, Allmendinger will pick up one extra date, filling in for Noah Gragson, who will likely be filling in for an injured Alex Bowman again this weekend.
For the 2022 season, Kaulig Racing prepared two full-time NASCAR Cup Series entries. One, the No. 31 would be driven by Justin Haley full-time. The second entry, the No. 16 would participate full-time, but have a part-time driver line up consisting of AJ Allmendinger, Daniel Hemric and Noah Gragson.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway's "South Point" 400 was originally planned to have Noah Gragson within the No. 16 car, but Gragson's ties with Chevrolet and Hendirck Motorsports draw him elsewhere this weekend.
In response to an impact with the wall at Texas Motor Speedway, Alex Bowman who drives the No. 48 for Hendrick Motorsports has sat out at Talladega, the Charlotte ROVAL, and is expected to do the same this weekend at Las Veags Motor Speedway. Gragson who drives for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series has filled in for Bowman at Talladega and the Charlotte ROVAL.
His unexpected withdrawal from the Kaulig Racing entry implies he is again on standby to drive the No. 48.
AJ Allmendinger will continue on a strong season of Cup Series competition, before his return to full-time Cup Series racing in 2023. Allmendinger has racked up a 16.4 average finish this season with the No. 16 Cup Series car, and has scored a total of six top-10 finishes.
At the Charlotte ROVAL, Allmendinger brought the No. 16 machine home to a 4th place finish after battling up front, all day. Heading to Las Vegas, a track where the veteran driver has won, Allmendinger could be on the road to another good finish.
