This Week in NASCAR History: March 27th - April 2nd


      NASCAR's deep history is surprisingly not very well known, even for avid fans; this article is meant to get fans in the know of the most notable NASCAR history that happened throughout this week. 


March 27th, 1949 - Fonty Flock wins the 40-lap feature at North Wilkesboro Speedway, notching his fourth consecutive Modified championship race. The 1948 NASCAR champion, Red Byron, is unable to compete in the event due to illness.


March 28th, 1954 - Dick Rathmann starts the 125-mile race at Oakland Speedway in last place but drives to the top spot to win at the dirt/pavement track. 


March 29th, 1959 - Junior Johnson wins the 100-mile race at Wilson Speedway, grabbing his first win of the season. Before the race, the big wooden grandstands catch on fire and burns to the ground; There was no one injured. 


March 27th, 1960 - Lee Petty bumps Junior Johnson out of the way to win the 100-mile race at North Wilkesboro Speedway. In victory lane, Petty is pelted by rocks and dirt, thrown by angry spectators.


April 2nd, 1967 - Cale Yarborough dominates the race at Atlanta by leading 301 of 334 laps and taking the checkered flag to win the Atlanta 500. Curtis Turner is involved in a crazy practice crash but is not injured.


March 29th, 1992 - Bill Elliot wins his fourth NASCAR Winston Cup win in a row by taking the checkered flag to win the TranSouth 500 at Darlington Speedway. Despite winning four of first five races in the season, Elliot still doesn't lead the points standings.


April 2nd, 2000 - Dale Earnhardt, Jr. takes the checkered flag to win the 500-mile race at Texas Motor Speedway, notching his first NASCAR Winston Cup series career victory.
