It is worth noting, that Gilliland will become the 4th different driver, to pilot the No. 38 Ford Mustang in the past 4 years. Here is the interesting list below:
- 2019 - Matt Tift
- 2020 - John Hunter Nemechek
- 2021 - Anthony Alfredo
And now it become four in 2022 with Gilliland moving up from... the NASCAR Truck Series?
Todd Gilliland has driven in the NASCAR Truck Series since 2017, but only 2 victories, and 3 full-time seasons under his belt. The first Truck victory came with Kyle Busch Motorsports at Martinsville in 2019, and the 2nd, most recently at Circuit of the Americas in 2021 with FRM. Gilliland has never started in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, or in the NASCAR Cup Series, which makes it an interesting pick for a Cup ride, I must say.
With no NASCAR Xfinity Series starts, how well do Gilliland adjust to his new ride? We won't know until we see him on track, but will he be a threat for the 2022 Rookie of the Year Award. That is an award which Gilliland will battle Austin Cindric and Harrison Burton for, in comparatively lesser equipment.
