JR Motorsports’ 35 year old driver Michael Annett announced moments ago (10/6/21) that he will be retiring from full time NASCAR competition at the end of the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series season. Throughout 13 years in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Michael Annett has claimed one victory, 19 top-5 finishes, and a impressive 93 top-10 finishes. Above all else, for JR Motorsports Annett brought stability through his sponsors such as Pilot Flying J and the American Heart Association.

As we have known for some time now, JR Motorsports has plans in place to field cars for Noah Gragson, Josh Berry, Justin Allgaier, and young Sam Mayer in 2022. Michael Annett on the other hand has been an unknown, and that question has now been solved. In the NASCAR Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series a team is allowed to field more than four full time cars, whereas the NASCAR Cup Series sets the limit at four. Due to this rule, and the team’s odd driver lineup rumors arose that a fifth JR Motorsports ride could open up to allow Annett a place at the team. Now we know he will be retiring altogether and there will be no purpose for a fifth race team.

One of the biggest factors in Annett’s decision to retire had to be a fracture to his femur bone that he sufferered earlier this season before the Summer’s Xfinity Series event at Atlanta Motor Speedway. That afternoon Austin Dillon would drive the No. 1 car. Since then Josh Berry and Annett have shared time in the No. 1 car as Annett has continued to re-injure himself time and time again.

As the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series season comes to a close Annett only has a a handful of opportunities to get back behind the wheel of the race car. With any luck his leg will fully heal in time for him to steer the No. 1 Camaro around Kansas Speedway for the championship race.
