JR Motorsports |
Josh Berry has officially won the NASCAR Xfinity Series “Alsco Uniforms” 302 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, driving the JR Motorsport No. 1 Camaro as he filled in for an injured Michael Annett.
As Berry drove to his first career victory earlier this season at Martinsville Speedway, the older than most rookie made his place known. After it was recently announced that Berry will return to the No. 8 team to drive full time in 2022, Berry has gotten some more part time experience in as he has driven the No. 1 in place of Michael Annett for multiple races now as Annett has struggled to recover from a fractured femur.
In tonight’s race Berry had some decent speed all night long, but that speed really came to play towards the middle of this race where he nudged his way into the top-10. Success came much easier for some drivers in this race, after several cars got wadded up in a restart towards the end of stage 1. This wreck occurred because back in row six, drivers had gone five wide just after a restart as the field approached turn one. The cars were simply too close for comfort and Riley Herbst’s No. 98 got sent sideways in front multiple other cars, and barreling towards Ty Dillon in the No. 31. Dillon made it out with minimum damage, but others like Jeremy Clements, Jeb Burton, Sam Mayer, JJ Yeley, Lipton Dylan, Riley Herbst, Alex Labe, and Joe Graf Jr. we’re not so lucky, having their days end far earlier than they would have liked.
Another big name who came to play tonight was Daniel Hemric. The 30 year old driver who is still in search of first career victory (in pretty much any series), has been very consistent this season, and once again came close to victory lane here at Las Vegas. Unfortunately for Hemric, his first place speed did not last the entirety of this race, and drivers like Justin Allgaier and Austin Cindric would pass him.
Like Hemric, Austin Cindric’s night had its glorious moments, but towards the end he fell back several positions to leave the battle between teammates Josh Berry and Justin Allgaier. Both drivers had just come for fresh tires, but the No. 1 was simply much faster than the No. 7, and Allgaier could not put up a battle. Once Berry got to the lead, he pulled away from his teammate, and it was easy riding to the finish. Now Josh Berry can claim all of the victories coming from two of JR Motorsports’ four cars.
AJ Allmendinger won stage one of this race, and Justin Allgaier won stage two.
