This Week In NASCAR History: August 22nd - 28th

    

     NASCAR's deep history is surprisingly not very well known, even for avid fans; This article is meant to get fans in the know of the most notable NASCAR news that happened throughout this week.


August 22nd, 1969 - Richard Petty scores a narrow win at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, marking his 100th NASCAR Grand National Series victory.

August 28th, 1977 - Cale Yarborough takes his eighth win of the season by winning the Volunteer 400 at Bristol, but gets marred by his car failing post-race inspection for the second time in a row. Female driver Janet Guthrie makes her best NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National Series effort by placing sixth.

August 25th, 1984 - Terry Labonte wins the Busch 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, grabbing the championship points lead. Labonte fights back for victory after two crashes - the first when Dale Earnhardt spins him, and the second when he scrapes Neil Bonnet with fifty laps to go.

August 25th, 1990 - Ernie Irvan notches his first NASCAR Winston Cup win by passing Dale Earnhardt in the last 50 miles and taking the checkered flag for the Busch 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

August 26th, 1995 - Dale Earnhardt slaps Terry Labonte sideways across the finish line in a last effort to win at Bristol Motor Speedway. Terry slides to a narrow victory, and then smashes into the concrete barrier just after taking the checkered flag.

August 28th, 2016 - Kyle Larson leads 41 laps to win the 'Pure Michigan 500' at Michigan International Speedway, bagging his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career win. There are 20 lead changes throughout the course of the race.
