This Week In NASCAR History: August 15th - 21st

        


    NASCAR's deep history is surprisingly not very well known, even for avid fans; This article is meant to get fans in the know of the most notable NASCAR news that happened throughout this week.

August 15th, 1961 - Curtis Turner and Tim Flock are banned for "for life" from competing in any NASCAR event; they are the only two drivers to not abandon the Teamsters Union project.


August 16th, 1961 - Junior Johnson wins the International 200 at Bowman Gray Stadium after leading the race from start to finish. The event is open to foreign cars, but only one car enters.


August 16th, 1970 - Charlie Glotzbach drives his Dodge Daytona to a caution flag victory at Michigan International Speedway. This is the first NASCAR event to use restrictor plates. 


August 16th, 1975 - Buddy Baker narrowly wins over Richard Petty, creating a photo finish in the Talladega 500. DeWayne "Tiny" Lund is killed in a multicar wreck on lap seven.


August 20th, 1978 - David Pearson takes the lead on the final lap to win the “Champion Spark Plug” 400 at Michigan. Richard Petty switches out his uncompetitive Dodge Magnum for a Chevrolet, but finishes 14th after a late race crash.


August 18th, 1991 - Dale Jarret wins the Champion Spark Plug 400, notching his first career NASCAR Winston Cup Series win. Jarret nudges past Davey Allison by a mere 10 inches to win, creating the closest finish in Michigan International Speedway history.


August 16th, 1992 - Harry Gant wins the Champion Spark Plug 400 to bag his 18th career victory. Davey Allison's little brother, Clifford Allison, is killed in a practice crash for a NASCAR Busch Series event.


August 15th, 2003 - NASCAR announces that longtime sponsor Unocal 76 will be replaced by Sunoco as the Official Fuel of NASCAR at the beginning of the 2004 season.
