Justin Haley wins Xfinity Series “Wawa” 250 at Daytona International Speedway

Kaulig Racing

Justin Haley has officially won the NASCAR Xfinity Series “Wawa” 250 at Daytona International Speedway coming out just ahead of his other Kaulig Racing teammates.

This race at Daytona international speedway was very excitement filled seeing lots of lead changes, and an aggressive change to the racing package. This race was originally scheduled to begin and finish on the night of Friday, August 27th, 2022, but after rain and other inclement weather began part way through the race, it was rescheduled for the next day at 12:30 PM ET.

In the begining of this race we saw drivers like Noah Gragson and AJ Allmendinger showing great speed and trying their very best to dominate. When the race was red flagged and moved to the next afternoon things changed. The setups in these cars were meant for cooler temperatures, which means more grip. When the temperatures were higher the next day, something had to be changed. Kaulig Racing, while dominating the night before seemingly only saw improvements as the temperatures increased as they battled at the front of the field for much of this race.

Another team that saw some pretty decent success was Joe Gibbs Racing. Though they lost the No. 19 car the night before to a blown engine, the No. 54 of Christopher Bell, and the No. 20 of Harrison Burton both worked together to find their way to the front. A team who wasn’t so lucky was JR Motorsport. While Justin Allgaier made his way to the front of the field in the No. 7 Camaro and had no trouble staying there, his teammates like Sam Mayer, Michael Annett, and Noh Gragson were not where the needed to be come the end of this race. Annett was involved in a wreck with Myatt Snider and Austin Cindric, Sam Mayer simply just struggled to stay in the front, and Gragson lost speed due to the rescheduled time of the race and the lost grip.

With the time line set up as I’ve described, coming to the end of this race, it appeared that Christopher Bell would score another NASCAR Xfinity Series victory for the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54. That was until Kaulig Racing teamed up. The team had been working together all day to stay up front, but when it appeared as though with 2 laps to go they were not going to win, Team President Chris Rice initiated a backup plan. This secret plan had all 3 Kaulig Racing drivers drop from the outside line, and push themselves past the No. 54 to the lead. This plan worked and the Kaulig Racing Camaros took it 3 wide for the final lap of the race blocking anybody from passing. The cars behind pushed and pushed as the field approached the finish line and though AJ Allmendinger was slightly ahead, a push from Daniel Hemric was all that Justin Haley needed to cross the finish line first.

This photo finish is one that won’t soon be forgotten, and the racing all day was phenomenal!
