AJ Allmendinger wins Xfinity Series race at Mid-Ohio

Kaulig Racing

AJ Allmendinger has won the “B&L Transport” 170 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, scoring his 7th career victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

While this race came down to the line, with many cars appearing to be potential winners, AJ Allmendinger’s victory was a big deal for his team, Kaulig Racing. Kaulig Racing, and the many Kaulig companies are based out of Ohio, and not to mention team owner himself, Matt Kaulig, is in fact a Ohio native. Not only did Kaulig Racing have one car contending for the win today, but they had two, as the No. 11 of Justin Haley finished just behind the No. 16 of AJ Allmendinger, bringing a 1-2 finish for Kaulig Racing.

While AJ Allmendinger won stage 1 of this race, and ultimately won the entire race, there were a few other drivers who appeared to have a chance at wining. One of those drivers was the young Ty Gibbs. Ty Gibbs continued his strong part time run in the No. 54 Toyota Supra for his grandfather’s team Joe Gibbs Racing, finishing 3rd overall. Gibbs was with the leaders all day, and for some of the race was a leader himself. The 18 year old was close to finding his 3rd Xfinity victory, but simply did not have the speed he needed at the right times. Another name that is worth noting is that of Austin Cindric. It’s no wonder that Team Penske’s defending Xfinity Series Champion is a driver who will have a chance to win week in and week out, though for a while, it appeared that Cindric was going to easily bring home a victory. As quickly as that all happened, that chance disappeared even faster. On a restart with 8 laps to go, the No. 22, the No. 54, and the No. 16 went three wide for the lead (which was ultimately the move that gave Allmendinger the win), this move also sent the No. 22 of Austin Cindric off course as the No. 54 and the No. 11 were banging doors. Cindric went from a contender for the win, to a top-15 finish at best.

These final laps of the race we’re very hectic, seeing Miguel Paludo (No. 8) take 4th place away from Riley Herbst (No. 98), and then proceed to throw a block on Herbst. This block worked all too well, as Herbst could not get around the No. 8 and spun him right into the grass. This seemed like a saving grace for Herbst, until moments later he too got the bumper from a struggling Andy Lally, the No. 98 was too left in the grass.

AJ Allmendinger won stage one of this race, while his Kaulig teammate Justin Haley won stage 2.
