After a stunning win in the Daytona 500, Michael McDowell will be the first driver of 2021, to write his own ticket, to the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. Though, will he have a decent average through out the season, to carry him into the playoffs with a good number of points?
Currently, McDowell sits 5th in points on the regular season title standings, and 3rd in projected playoff points. Yes, this is the first, points-paying race, of the 2021 Cup Series season, so there will be a lot of changes on the projected playoff field. Only 16 drivers will advance past the regular season into the playoffs, and if 17 different drivers win, the one with the least number of points, does not advance.
Here are the current, top 16 drivers on the leaderboard:
- Austin Dillon [No. 3 Chevrolet / Richard Childress Racing] - 58 Points
- Denny Hamlin [No. 11 Toyota / Joe Gibbs Racing] - 52 Points (2 Stage Points)
- Kevin Harvick [No. 4 Ford / Stewart-Haas Racing] - 50 Points
- Chase Elliott [No. 9 Chevrolet / Hendrick Motorsports] - 48 Points
- Michael McDowell [No. 34 Ford / Front Row Motorsports] - 46 Points (1 Win)
- Ryan Preece [No. 37 Chevrolet / JGT Daugherty Racing] - 46 Points
- Kyle Larson [No. 5 Chevrolet / Hendrick Motorsports] - 41 Points
- Bubba Wallace [No. 23 Toyota / 23XI Racing] - 41 Points
- Joey Logano [No. 22 Ford / Team Penske] - 40 Points
- Christopher Bell [No. 20 Toyota / Joe Gibbs Racing] - 35 Points
- Ross Chastain [No. 42 Chevrolet / Chip Ganassi Racing] - 32 Points
- Corey LaJoie [No. 7 Chevrolet / Spire Motorsports] - 32 Points
- Kyle Busch [No. 18 Toyota / Joe Gibbs Racing] - 32 Points
- Cole Custer [No. 41 Ford / Stewart-Haas Racing] - 27 Points*
- Brad Keselowski [No. 2 Ford / Team Penske] - 25 Points
- Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. [No. 47 Chevrolet / JTG Daugherty Racing] - 19 Points
* Jamie McMurray is 14th in points (30 Points), but not eligible for playoffs. So Stenhouse, though in 17th, is eligible.
