After a long and wild speed week in Daytona Beach Florida to kick off the 2021 season, many NASCAR Cup Series drivers have had to make repairs, and even move to their back-up cars for tomorrow’s Daytona 500.
While most of these repairs or replacements are necessary, only some of them come without consequences. For this reason nine drivers will be forced to start in the back of the pack at the 2021 Daytona 500.
These drivers are:
- Brad Keselowski (Team Penske No. 2 Ford, qualified: 24th)
- Reason: Car damaged in Bluegreen Vacations duel #2, back-up car needed
- William Byron (Hendrick Motorsports No. 24 Chevrolet, qualified 2nd):
- Reason: Car damaged in Bluegreen Vacations duel #2, back-up car needed
- Cole Custer (Stewart-Haas Racing No. 41 Ford, qualified: 27th)
- Reason: Switching to back-up car... possibly steering issues?
- Erik Jones (Richard Petty Motorsports No. 43, qualified: 31st)
- Reason: Needs to swap engine
- Anthony Alfredo (Front Row Motorsports No. 38, qualified: 36th)
- Reason: Car damaged in Bluegreen Vacations duel #2, back-up car needed
- Martin Truex Jr. (Joe Gibbs Racing No. 19, qualified: 26th)
- Reason: Radiator/oil cooler change
- Chase Briscoe (Stewart-Haas Racing No. 14, qualified: 22nd)
- Reason: Car damaged in Bluegreen Vacations duel #2, back-up car needed
- Ross Chastain (Chip Ganassi Racing No. 42, qualified: 34th)
- Reason: Car damaged in Bluegreen Vacations duel #2, back-up car needed
- Kaz Grala (Kaulig Racing No. 16, qualified: 40th)
- Reason: Car damaged in Bluegreen Vacations duel #2, back-up car needed
- Bubba Wallace (23XI Racing No. 23, qualified: 4th)
- Reason: Failed pre-race inspection twice with rear toe issues, penalized
While I’m confident drivers like Brad Keselowski, William Byron, and Cole Custer will be able to overcome this obstacle, it’s unclear whether or not this will set back other drivers like Anthony Alfredo, or Erik Jones. All we can do is wait and see how it all plays out.
