Daniel Suárez finishes 16th after vomiting in his helmet

Trackhouse Racing

Daniel Suárez, driver of the Trackhouse Racing No. 99 Chevrolet Camaro Zl1 1LE, finished 16th in yesterday’s “O’Reilly Auto Parts” 253 at the Daytona Road Course.

This finish was the first finish for the team, as they wrecked out of their first race, the Daytona 500, last week on lap 14. This finish was was a huge landmark for the organization, and would be considered an accomplishment for really any team, though it did not come with out it’s challenges.

Daniel Suárez posted to Twitter Sunday evening detailing his struggles through out the final laps of the race. According to Daniel Suárez, on lap 45 of the race he began to feel sick, and with 15 laps left in the race, the driver vomited inside of his helmet.

Amazingly through all of this, Suárez still managed to finish in 16th place, and before vomiting even led a few laps, after the team decided to stay out during the caution between stages 2 and 3.

While I’m sure this incident was not at all pleasant for Daniel Suárez, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened in NASCAR. Back in 2011 during the Coke 400 at Daytona, Carl Edwards who was also driving the No. 99 (for a different team), had damaged a crush panel on his car. This damaged crush panel was located next to the car’s exhaust, allowing fumes to enter the car. Those fumes from the car’s exhaust led to Edwards becoming nauseous, and eventually vomiting inside of his car.

Even though this situation was unfortunate, luckily Suárez persevered and finished 16th. This finish at the Daytona Road Course will move Suárez from 34th to 21st in the Cup Series standings, as they head to Homestead-Miami Speedway next week.
