AJ Allmendinger returns to the NASCAR Cup Series with Kaulig Racing

Action Sports | Kaulig Racing

Kaulig Racing announced today (1/21/21) AJ Allmendinger would return to the NASCAR Cup Series to race the Daytona Road Course in February in the No. 16 Chevrolet. Allmendinger has not competed in the NASCAR Cup Series since 2018 when he retired from full time competition.

Allmendinger was known for dominance at road course races, where he scored three top fives, nine top tens, and his only win in the NASCAR Cup Series (Watkins Glen International, 2014). In the Xfinity Series Allmendinger has found himself in victory lane four times, of those wins, two were with Kaulig Racing. Allmendinger hopes to bring this dominance to the Daytona Road Course on Feb. 21st.

Chris Rice (President of Kaulig Racing) told the Kaulig Racing media team "Having AJ (Allmendinger) compete in our very first non-superspeedway Cup race was really a no-brainer for us"

It was announced back in December that Allmendinger would be competing full time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with  Kaulig Racing, in their third full time seat. It has become clear that the 39 year old has no plans to slow down yet. Kaulig also announced last week that they would be entering Kaz Grala in the Daytona 500 with hopes of earning a starting position. The No. 16 car will have to qualify to enter both the Daytona 500, and the Daytona Road Course races as it is not being run on a charter.

While further information has been released (as of the time this article was published), AJ Allmendinger's obvious dominance in road course races, and his extensive experience in the NASCAR Cup Series makes Allmendinger a likely candidate to drive for Kaulig Racing in any future road course races that they may decide to run in the NASCAR Cup Series. Kaulig Racing's intent to expand to the NASCAR Cup Series is quite obvious, so it's really not a question of if, but a question of when.
