This Week in NASCAR History: February 27th - March 5th

        NASCAR's deep history is surprisingly not very well known, even for avid fans; this article is meant to get fans in the know of the most notable NASCAR history that happened throughout this week.


February 27th, 1955 - Fireball Roberts wins the 160-mile race at Daytona Beach but is disqualified when officials find that the pushrods in his Buick racecar were altered by 1/16th of an inch. The win is handed to rookie Tim Flock, who had come in second, giving Flock's team owner, Carl Kiekhaefer a victory.


March 2nd, 1958 - Lee Petty is declared the winner of the NASCAR Grand National race at Concord Speedway. After four days of deliberation, it was found that, despite Curtis Turner and Speedy Thompson apparently finishing first and second, that Lee Petty had finished the 200 laps first, according to the scorecard data.


February 28th, 1960 - 22-year-old Richard Petty takes the checkered flag to win the 100-mile NASCAR Grand National race at Charlotte Fairgrounds Speedway, notching his first NASCAR Grand National career win.


February 28th, 1965 - During a drag racing event, Richard Petty, driving his 1965 Plymouth Barracuda, loses control of his car and crashes into the fence, injuring 7 people and killing an eight-year-old boy. 


March 1st, 1970 - James Hylton takes the checkered flag to win the 1970 Daytona 500, marking his first NASCAR Grand National career victory. It is Hylton's first start in a Ford racecar, after racing Dodges for four years.
