Ty Dillon to pilot the GMS Racing No. 94 in the NASCAR Cup Series full-time in 2022

GMS Racing

GMS Racing announced just moments ago that Ty Dillon, the Grandson of Richard Childress, and the younger brother of Austin Dillon will drive the team's No. 94 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the NASCAR Cup Series for the 2022 race season. Next season will mark GMS Racing's first season in the NASCAR Cup Series, and now a second chance for Ty Dillon to prove his racing abilities. The team's Cup Series venture will be an alliance with Richard Childress Racing.

GMS Racing currently does not hold a charter for the No. 94 team, but is considering obtaining one.  GMS told reporters during today's press conference: "The charter stuff is an ongoing soap opera. We're going to run full-time, we'll run open if we have to, this is has been the hardest thing I've ever done in my life."

GMS Racing, who boasts an impressive 40 victories and 295 top-ten finishes in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will team up with Ty Dillon, who has 166 races under his belt. Dillon, while not the most stand out driver slated for Cup Series competition in 2022, he does hold experience seldom found by other free agents in the NASCAR world. Racing in NASCAR's top-three series' since 2011, Dillon has experience not even rivaled by Matt DiBenedetto who many suspected to fill the seat of GMS Racing's Cup Series entry.

GMS Racing had a short three season bout in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with drivers like Spencer Gallagher, John Hunter Nemechek, Ben Kennedy, and even big names like Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, and Johnny Sauter behind the wheel of their cars. Unfortunately the team would shut down in the final months of 2019 to begin a greater focus on their Truck Series program. Now with some momentum from Truck Series Championships with drivers like Brett Moffitt and Shledon Creed, the team will make the big jump straight into the Cup Series.

Ty Dillon who has some decent talent, including a lone stage-win during the 2020 Cup Series race at the Charlotte ROVAL, does pose some issues with sponsorship. The 29 year old driver has recieved sponsorship from brands like Bass Pro Shops, Geico, and General Mills, but each one of those sponsorships was facillitated by team relation, and would not follow Dillon to his further ventures, that is except for one. Bass Pro Shops who was previously mentioned as one of Ty Dillon's sponsors, continues to support Ty Dillon  even after the struggles he has seen in the past year with his race team (Germain Racing) losing major sponsor Geico, and then closing its doors after being bought by 23XI Racing. Dillon has sturgged to find opportunities to get behind the wheel of a race car in the past year, but when he did find part time opportunities, Bass Pro Shops, or one of their sister companies were often found as a part of the sponsorship. Now that Dillon has found a full time ride in NASCAR's most prestigeous series, we can expect that Johnny Morris' Bass Pro Shops will climb aboard the No. 94 car to help Ty Dillon retain his employment.

Ty Dillon told reporters during today's press conference that "It's definitely not been an easy past yea, but you just stay patient and hopeful and the right opportunities come for you and boy do I feel like this a great opportunity.". Ty Dillon will likely continue work with some patience, because as he has for most of his career he will not be driving extremely competitive equipment right from the get-go. Instead, it seems as though GMS Racing will work to slowly develop into a competitive team.

Be sure to keep your eye out for more news on Ty Dillon and GMS Racing's introduction into the NASCAR Cup Series, as Stock Car Media will be sure to report on it in the upcoming weeks, months, and years.
