Martin Truex Jr. wins the “Goodyear” 400 Throwback race at Darlington

Joe Gibbs Racing

Martin Truex Jr. has won the “Goodyear” 400 throwback race at Darlington Raceway, becoming the first driver to win 3 races in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season.

This race at Darlington, was not your normal race, for many reasons, but most specifically due to NASCAR’s scheduling of the throwback weekend. During this race we saw paint schemes of days gone by, and saw our heroes honored. This brought a huge anticipation for the “Goodyear” 400, and to some extent it lived up to that.

During this race we saw one driver dominate the most, and that was our race winner, Martin Truex, Jr.. While the rest of the field was constantly shuffling, Truex himself was often times found in the lead. Truex’s two biggest challengers of this race were Kyle Busch, and Kyle Larson. Of these two driver’s Kyle Larson was the only driver able to catch Martin Truex, but this effort was too little too late, as in the closing laps he simply could not get close enough.

This race featured some pretty extreme incidents involving the inside wall. The most notable of these incidents would likely have to be the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 10, and No. 41. In very similar wrecks, both these cars went on a wild ride, as their drivers lost control, and slammed nose first into the wall. Both Aric Almirola and Cole Custer’s cars had their front wheels elevated off of the racing surface and would unfortunately have to end their days quite early. One of the other incidents involving this inside wall was with Kurt Busch, and (possibly) Bubba Wallace. While it’s hard to tell, it appears that contact between the No. 1 of Kurt Busch, and the No. 23 of Bubba Wallace resulted in the No. 1 spinning into the wall, and ending in a first mess. This incident was really quite unfortunate for Kurt Busch, especially with the tough luck he’s had this season. This incident was only a continuation of that luck.

Likely the most exciting moment in this race was Kyle Larson’s 3-wide attempt into the corner with Ryan Newman and Tyler Reddick. This move certainly looked like it was going to end very messy, but luckily all three drivers made it out unscathed. The only unfortunate part of this was that it was somewhat unnecessary, since Larson was unable to get to Truex anyways.

Martin Truex Jr. swept this race winning all three stages.
